The equipment: Northern Star 386SX (16MHz, Award BIOS) Rodime RO3000TS drive (210M) Adaptec 1542B SCSI adapter Trident TVGA 8800 graphics adapter MSC Omnimouse, EasyData 2400bps modem The average seek time on my previous adapter (an ordinary DTC) was about 12ms which increased to 21ms when I installed the Adaptec 1542B adapter. The amazing 75% (!) increase cannot be normal or acceptable. The transfer rate is OK, about 980K/s according to SPINTEST. BTW, I seem to have now a drive with 64 heads, 32 sectors/track and 199 cylinders (208666624 bytes). Has the conversion of the number of heads and cylinders anything to do with the problem and is there a way to configure the conversion scheme? I have tried to alter various parameters with the SCSICNTL but they seem to affect neither the conversion nor the seek time. Any ideas? -- Pertti Suomela ps@cc.tut.fi Tampere University of Technology, Finland
