[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] VGA on-board memory

flaregun@chopin.udel.edu (Edwin Phillips) (04/09/91)

On a _standard_ VGA card with 256K, it is simple to access the first 64K of
the card's memory by writing to segment A000H in the PC memory map. Is it
possible to read/write to the rest of the memory on the card? If not, why
not? Why is there 256K? What is it used for? What is the other 192K used for?
I know that this problem is solved on the super-standard VGA cards by using a
special "windowing" register which sets up a 64K window into the card's memory
(on the Western Digital card at least). Is there a similar way to access memory
in the card that comes with say, a PS/2 Model 30, 50, 70... etc?? Help!?!?
