[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Audio DAT's for backup, anyone?

hpasanen@cs.hut.fi (Harri Pasanen) (04/05/91)

I'm just curious about this and wondered that maybe somebody has already
looked into it.

Some audio DAT tape recorders have both digital inputs and outputs.
Has anybody tried to build an interface to use these for backup purposes?
It would seem that with a small amount of hardware and some software we
could have a very high capasity backup system, and quite inexpensive if
you are planning to buy a DAT for music anyway.

I don't know the electrical characteristics of the IO in DATs, but I believe
it is a serial interface.

I asked in comp.peripherals.scsi if DAT drives with audio capability were
available, but I guess not.

So if anybody knows if one could do it himself, please share your knowledge.

Thank's

Harri Pasanen

Don't know about DATs but PC Connection has a $99
card that lets you back up 110 Megs on a VHS cassette.
All you need is a VCR.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work well?
