I've been upgrading my old IBM PC AT by adding a new Seagate ST-251-1 drive, but I wanted to check to see if what I did sounded OK. The problem is that the drive is type 44 and my SETUP disk permits only drive types from 1-15. Using the Seagate Disk Manager program I was able to define a non-standard drive-type that had the same number of cylinders, heads, and sectors/track as the 251-1. I have reason to believe the controller is made by CMI as the drive I replaced was a CMI drive, but I've looked on the controller and see no indications of the manufacturer. I completed low-level, and high level formats of the drive and it appears to work. My only concern is that the disk manager had five or six other parameters that I could have specified while defining my drive type (I forget what they were...something like write-speed, etc). Just wondered if someone has tried to install a Seagate drive on an old CMI controller and if they see any problems (my biggest fear is of some kind of latent problem) with what I've done. Any ideas or comments on what I've done would be greatly appreciated.
