[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Sony 1304 HG monitor - black line

klimperi@uafhp.uark.edu (Kurt Limperis) (04/18/91)

My Sony 1024x768 monitor has a horizontal black line, one pixel wide about
2.5" from the bottom of the screen. It only appears when the background is
a light color (of course). The tech support person at the company I bought
it from says that there is a horizontal wire inside the monitor that blocks
one scan line. I forgot what he said the wire is for (apeture compensation
something or other?).

Has anyone else seen this? Does the HG stand for Horizontal Gap? Has this
been discussed before?

This seems to be typical of Sony monitors. They use a Trinitron CRT
which has long slits in the shadow mask rather than the holes used in a
more traditional CRT. The gap you notice is indeed a wire to help
keep the shadow mask stable. The workstation I am using to write this
has a 19" Sony 1152x900 monitor and it has two wires, each one third
of the way from the top and bottom of the screen (and thus two
horizontal gaps.)

I made note to that line on my new Sony 1304 just purchased 2 weeks ago
but I compared it to several 1304s at work and they all had the same
line. It seems the tech person may be right or at least that this line
is 'normal' for the Sony 1304. I have no other complaints however.
The monitor is a beaut. I haven't heard anything but praise about it.

you might be right! =^)
