[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Keyboard hickups with V20 - Help

groot@idca.tds.philips.nl (Henk de Groot) (04/18/91)

I have a problem with installing a V20 processor in my 8088 XT. I tried it
and at first it seemd to work fine. After a while however the keyboard
got an hickup and switched to CAPS, or NUM-LOCK or SCROLL LOCK or thinks ALT
is depressed or RIGTH-SHIFT or CONTROL or... If one of those toggle keys
was stuck than I could read the bios-flags and see that the flag for the
offending key was set. After resetting the flag the keybloard was normal again,
for the time beiing that is.

I put back my 8088 and the problem was gone. Note that the problem is of
sporadic nature, sometimes it was ok the whole day, sometimes it was wrong
over and over again. Which key seemd to be depressed was random although the
alt-key and numlock-key seem to be favorit. If the numlock was stuck than the
indication light stayed off and the function of the numlock seemed to be
reversed (on=off and off=on).

I think it's an interfacing problem between my PC and my keyboard, and I want
to solve it because i like to use the V20. I don't think its a design fault
because with the original 8088 it works flawlesly (sp?).

My keybloard is an XT type with the function-keys on the lefthand-side.

I have the following questions:

- Did someone have an simular problem and found a solution.
- How does the PC talk to my keyboard (hardware-wise).
- Could it have someting to do with the increased CPU-speed.
- Would an AT-type keyboard solve my problem
- Any other suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your reply's

Henk.

what do you mean by 'increased CPU-speed'?
do you know that you have to put the compatible speed V20 chip into your
computer? i.e. An 8Mhz V20 replaces an 8Mhz 8088. This could be your
problem.

Where did you get the chip. I have an 8086 that I would like to replace
with a V30, but the only mail-order place I know of , jamco, requires >$50
purchases.

Nope, it's a chip with the same frequency allright, but what I meant is that
there might be timing-loops in the bios which are not propperly timed anymore
because some instructions are executed faster in a V20 v.s. i8088. I don't
know which instructions but maybe somebody with the same problems had a clue
or - even better - a fix for it.

There is also NO problem with the execution of programs or whatever, only
the PC <-> keyboard interface seems to fail ocasionaly. And as this is
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware I suspect that there is a multitude of readers
with knowledge of that interface who might have an answer or can reason
what could be going on.

I have to correct someting in behalf of the taiwaneese people, my keyboard
is not from thaiwan but from thailand.
