[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Problem with VGA and Hayes Modem

acton@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Brian L. Acton) (04/23/91)

I own an Epson Equity I+ with a Paradise VGA card and a Hayes
Smartmodem 1200B. Recently I purchased a 2400 baud modem as an upgrade.
My dilemma is that when I took the Hayes out of its slot. The computer
will not boot and instead will flash weird wavy (sp?) lines and never
even do a memory test. Thinking that it might be from the new modem I
installed I took it out and still got the same wavy lines and no boot.
Needless to say after trying all the possible combinations of both modems
and video card, I've discovered that my computer will not boot with the
video card unless it has the Hayes in the slot right next to it. I've
personally called both Paradise and my local Epson dealer and each
was equally baffled and said he had no idea why the video card would
be dependent on the Hayes modem. The end result is that I have BOTH
modems installed with the my video card. The system works like a charm,
but I'd rather not have the extra modem. Does anyone have an idea of how
I can find a way to take out the extra modem? I've been puzzling over
this for awhile and any advice would be much appreciated. As always,
either post to the net or email and I'll summarize if there is any
response.

			Thanks in advance,

			Brian
