Operating under the dictum that if it looks too good to be true, it
probably is, I'd like to know about positive or negative experiences people
might have had with two companies that advertise relatively inexpensive 386
and 486 clones in the April, 1991 issue of PC Sources.
The first company is Computer Sales Professional. They advertise a 486-25
based system with 4 Meg RAM, a 200 Meg SCSI drive and a Super VGA color
monitor for the incredible price of $2859. Another system they advertise
is a 386-33 with a cache, 1 Meg RAM, and again Super VGA and a 200 Meg
hard drive for $2339. They claim they have a 45 day money-back guarantee
and take purchase orders. Sounds too good to be true. Is it?
Another only slightly less extraordinary offer in the same magazine is
from Comtrade, which advertises a customer list including Yale, Stanford,
General Electric, and other famous names. They offer a 486-25 system with
128K cache RAM, 4 Meg RAM, 130 Meg IDE drive, Super VGA color, and a mouse for
$3190. They have a 30 day money-back guarantee, and they claim most of
their systems are sold to major corporations.
If there's interest, I'll summarize E-mail replies. Thanks.
