[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Good mice

skesterk@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Shane Kesterke) (04/26/91)

I've been thinking about getting a mouse. I noticed Logitech's mice are
around $60 and Microsoft's are around $80. I've also seen mice for as low
as $19. I figure the lower the price the higher the probability it won't
be compatable with various programs. Does anyone out there have a cheap
mouse that they haven't gotten any trouble from? Or should I just go with
Logitech or Microsoft?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

The real differences are not usually compatibility (most are compatible with
a Microsoft mouse), but:

	1.	Reliability
	2.	Accuracy/repeatability
	3.	Feel

The feel issue involves sloppy or firm buttons, sloppy or jerky movement,
and other factors.

IMHO:

If you have never used a Microsoft or Logitech mouse, you may be
perfectly happy with a cheap mouse. If you have used a good mouse,
you may find it extremely distracting using a cheap mouse.

Your milage may vary.

The only mouse worth getting is the microsoft mouse.
It is perfectly compatible, both by definition, and in
practice, unlike the logidreck. It is the best feeling
and best tracking mouse in the world. I only wish I
could get one for my stupid Mac. And my stupid Apollo.

It doesn't have to be perfect to be useful.

I will agree that the new MS Mouse is very nice, but you overgeneralized.
first of all, Logitech puts on some DAMNED nice mice. That new wireless is
awesome. The ergonomic mice are REAL nice to use, and the third button is
occasionally useful.

And MS mice are NOT always compatible. There have been several times when
they screwed up their drivers with new mice and old programs wouldn't work
anymore.

I must disagree. I've had my C7 for ~6 years, never even cleaned it once, and
have not had a bit of trouble with it. Besides that, Logitech's new mice
come with a lifetime warranty. Not bad for 65 bucks.
