[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Problem with Seagate 4144R Drive

chu2_ss@troi.cc.rochester.edu (Jim Huang) (05/01/91)

I have a Seagate ST 4144-R drive (120Mb, RLL, 28ms) that has been giving
me problems. Let me describe the symptoms to you:

While loading an .EXE, the computer displays: Data Error Reading Drive E.
Tried to reboot, but the computer displays: Error Loading Command Interpreter.
(Getting a little worried right now...)
Boot with a floppy and can access C: and D: but not E: and F:
Try running a program on C:, but won't load (disk error)
Shut the computer off, and back on. HD won't boot again.
Shut the computer off, check all cables, try again the next morning.
The HD boots fine now. I use it for a few minutes, reboot again, but
it fails. (A heat-related problem, maybe?)
Norton won't work on the drive. Try a low-level format with Disk
Manager. Lots of defective sectors on surfaces 0 and 1.

Does anyone out there know what may be going on? This drive is only
one year old, and I keep the computer on most of the time (shut off maybe
once a week or so). The infamous 20 Mb CMI drive on my original AT is
still working after five years, and that gets shut on and off all the time!

Thank you very much
Jim Huang
