[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Help with ps/2 mouse and Western Digital 286 motherboard

andyh@chaos.cs.brandeis.edu (Andrew J. Huang) (05/02/91)

I need some help with a Logitech mouse on a Western Digital 286
motherboard.

I just bought a PS/2 Mouseman to plug into the PS/2 mouseport on the
motherboard. It doesn't work, but the mouse is fine on other
machines.

Symptoms:
If I plug the mouse in before powering up, the bootup acts "funny"
and the keyboard is totally inoperative. Microsoft's extended memory
manager is also unable to load ("can't load A20 handler").
If I plug the mouse in after powering up, the keyboard is
still ok, but there's no sign of the mouse (from the mouse
installation program's view).

System:
    WD286-WM2 motherboard, 12mhz, 0 wait. Uses 8742 keyboard/mouse
controller. Cable continuity checked.

Questions:
Does anybody have experience with this motherboard and its mouse
port?
Beyond connectors, is a PS/2 mouse any different from a serial
mouse? (i.e. Could I adapt the connector to my serial port?)

Thanks,
    Andy Huang
