[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Add-on boards for 386

chchoi@eng.auburn.edu (Cheong Hyeon Choi) (05/02/91)

 Hi! There.

I was trying to upgrade xt into 386sx. Then I am likely to know several
new ideas on Memory board, I/O card and H/F/D controller to save
my limited budget. Please give me a chance to migrate old xt into 386sx
without investing excessively much money.

 My questions are as follows:
  1. I have 2M DRAM (256k, 100ns) as the expanded memory for xt. Somebody said
100ns DRAM may prevent 386's fast 0-wait state to operate properly.
So I'd better throw them away and buy the other 80 or 70 ns memory
for 386sx's normal operation. Is it true? And if it's true, is there any way to use these 2M DRAMs as the extended memory, using a memory board?
  2. Now I have 8-bit I/O card, Floppy disk controller and 8-bit ST-11R
h/d controller for my old xt. A technical staff of mail-order company
said that they do not recommend those 8-bit stuffs for 386 because
of the performance. I understand the case of h/d controller but
what I like to know is: if I use 16-bit floppy disk controller,
can I feel it becomes really faster? In case of 8-bit I/O card,
I like to know what advantage the use of 16-bit I/O card shows in 386.
And Is there any problem if I use 8-bit I/O card in 386?

With my a little knowledge on xt, I can not figure out why 8-bit based
add-on cards have problems. Could you help me in these points?

 Thank you in advance.

 Choi.
