[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Device to control ligths, appliances ..

Hi!

    I'd like to find the diagrams for building a device that can be 
connected to a parallel port or to the RS232.  This device would be 
able to control other devices around the house such as the lights, 
the appliances etc...  

   I don't have the knowledge to design such a device but I am can
build it .. Can anyone indicate me a specific magazine or book that
contains that type of diagrams?
