A random list of things to do in the SEA/TAC and Portland areas from an
ex-Californian who LOVES the Northwest:

In Seattle and area:
Go up the Space Needle if you get a clear day for an OUTSTANDING view.
Do it just before the sun goes down to get the city and mountains
lit up. Do it in the morning to see the Sound.

Visit the Boeing factory and see 757's and 767's manufactured. MOST
interesting. Small children not allowed. Arrive EARLY to get in.
       Phone for info.

Take a ferry trip to Bremerton and back for a beautiful view of Seattle
on the return trip. Best in late afternoon.

Side trip to the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park. Hurricane
Ridge is outstanding. So is the Hoh Valley on a non-rainy day.
      Nice campground at Crescent Lake.

Visit the San Juan Islands by Washington State Ferry from Anacortes.
You can stop off on the way to Victoria or just visit the islands.
Friday Harbor is the chief town.

Enroute from Seattle to Portland:

Stop at the Mt. St. Helens visitor center and DON'T MISS the film.
Drive up the road as far as you can go for a first-hand look at the
     devastation. Extremely impressive.

Visit Mt. Rainier Nat. Park. Has very nice hiking/walking trails and
     good campgrounds.

Portland area:

Go to Mt. Hood. Nice campgrounds, lakes, trails, etc.

   Columbia River gorge. Very scenic.

On the way to the Northwest (besides the things you mentioned):

Glacier Nat. Park/Waterton Lakes. One of the best of the national parks
in the west. Waterton Lake is especially pretty--reminds one of a
Norwegian fjord. The boat trip down the lake is very nice.

Seafood recommendation in Seattle (DON'T MISS):

Ivar's Salmon House--serves fresh salmon barbecued over alder logs.
Decor is Pacific N.W. indian lodge. Absolutely delicious (on our
last visit we went back twice). Located under the Lake Union bridge
near the Univ. of Washington. About $10/plate. Highly recommended!

Suggested side trip from Seattle:

Vancouver and/or Victoria, B.C. are two delightful cities with lots to
see and do. Vancouver has an especially beautiful setting. Victoria
is charming and is supposed to be like England. Write to the B. C.
Tourist Board in Victoria for lots of information.
