I have an AST Premium/286 that I am interested in upgrading to a 386
or 386sx. I am aware of solutions from Microway (the FastCache SX
board) and from Cyrix that will do this, but I also recall an AST
product was once available. It was supposed to plug into one of the
FASTRAM slots and turn your 286 into a 386.
I put one of the Microway boards into an 8Mhz Compaq Deskpro 286 and
it worked VERY well. It certainly worked well enough that I'm not
about to take the board out to try it in the AST. The person using
the Compaq would kill me if I did this. I'd like to similarly upgrade
the AST, but the $700 that I spent on the FastCache board is pushing
the limits of what I think is reasonable.
If anyone can supply info on options to accomplish this upgrade, or
pointers to a dealer that might be willing to part with the needed
hardware at a reasonable price, I would appreciate it.
Thanks!
