[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Taking care of your disks

skesterk@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Shane Kesterke) (05/09/91)

I've got a 100mb IDE hard drive and since no manuals of any kind came with
it ("benefits" of going mail-order) I'm not sure what I have to do to keep
it running reliably. Do I have to re-format it once a year to refresh the
magnatism and if I do is it with FORMAT or FDISK? Is there any other work
or check-ups that need to be done every now-and-then to make sure your
data won't be lost. All I basically know is that it's wise to park the
drive heads when you transport your computer!
Also, these questions could probably also apply to floppies as well. When
data is put on a floppy and then sits around for a few years can the
magnatism just decay? Is it wise to somehow refresh the data on your diskettes?

These questions can all be summed by asking: What steps must one take to rest
assured his disks (hard and floppy) are reliably storing, and will continue
to store, his data.

Thanks for any responses!
