[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Mixing IDE drive types...

banner@einstein ( infotech) (05/13/91)

Simple question (but aren't they all ?!):

Is it possible to run two different IDE drives from the same controller?

For example: I am considering adding a Seagate ST1144A to my home
system that currently has a single Seagate ST157A drive in it. The
controller is a generic controller (no-name) and it also drives the
two floppies in the system.

I always thought IDE drives were pretty much "plug and play". Put the
drive in, use fdisk to set up the partitions (choosing the correct
physical drive...) do a high level DOS format and you're done....
Right??

In the last couple of weeks several people have mentioned that you
cannot mix IDE drive types on a single controller. What's the scoop
here?

Does anyone have both a ST1144A and a ST157A in their system, coexisting
fine?
