[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Question about Multibus 310 PC

joseph@panix.uucp (Joseph R. Skoler) (05/14/91)

Hello,

I came across 2 Intel PC's and I wonder if anyone knows anything about them.

They are actually called MultiBus systems, and have a 286/12 processor,
a 287 co-processor, a 40 meg hard drive, and oodles of 25 pin connector
on the back (which, I believe, are for hooking up terminals).

My questions are: Can this run Dos? Can it run Unix? Will it support
a video card and monitor or do I need a dumb terminal to go with it?
Where does the keyboard hook up (if indeed it does)?

I called Intel, but got a major run-around. Someone did say it was
originally for industrial use, and is probably a MultiBus 1 (or A).

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joseph R. Skoler

Yep, that's what they're for. And it's not really what I'd call a PC,
either. What you need to do is to hook a terminal on the serial port
on the CPU card, turn it on, and see what comes out. It'll probably be
stars or something similar. Hit U to let it sync the baud rate and it
should run through some diagnostics and try to boot from the hard disk.

You may have to trace wires to find the right serial port.

It's most likely got a System III based Xenix, RMX-286, or MS-DOS on
it. It's not compatible with the IBM-PC, but I think there's a PC
type display card you can get. You'd be better off with terminals, though.

If it's got a lot of serial ports it's probably not DOS. Probably a 16
user or less Xenix box.

It's almost certainly Multibus-1 based, and not a bad little box. I'm
logged into one now.

But it has little to do with the ipsc310. This chain should probably go
into comp.sys.intel.
