[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Formatting a 1.44 MB disk to 720 kB - easy

     Well how about this:

There's a nice little program out there (I'm not sure where, but I
could send it to you if it isn't on Simtel-20) that will take care of
formatting for you.

It's a background formatter called Conformat. I think it's made by
Sydex. Basically it works like this:

     1) you load the program in memory (this can be done auto-magically
if you have registered your copy ($15) at the autoexec.bat)
     2) It is then activated when needed by a "hot-key" which you pick
-mine is: left-shift alt f (which shift key makes a difference)
     3) You tell it how you want to format your floppy (this part is menu
driven), stick in your floppy, and OFF IT GOES.
     4) you continue to use your computer to do whatever as normal (but NO
use of ANY floppies - that will probably hang your machine)
     5) ConFormat beeps you when it's done.

In my experience (granted it's limited) ConFormat doesn't care what kind
of floppy you stick in there. By the way, I just tested it with formatting
a HD floppy to 720K and it worked.

I also just checked and found it on Simtel-20 in the file:
PD1:<msdos.dskutl>cnfmt107.zip

I'd say it's worth it, but if you want some more info, send me e-mail
and save some disk space.
