[net.travel] Wanted: info on Greece

rrizzo@bbncca.ARPA (Ron Rizzo) (04/11/84)

I'm planning a trip to Greece in September or early October. It'll
be my first trip there. I'd appreciate any information people could
give me.

Specifically, how easy/difficult is it to:

	1. arrange land transport on the mainland? I assume it's
easy to island-hop (do ships sail often enough to Delos?).

	2. find lodging off the "beaten track", eg., in small towns
	   in the Peloponessos?

	3. to drive a car? Only for the fearless?

	4. communicate away from the cities & tourist centers? Will a
survival vocabulary in Greek suffice? How small can it be?

	5. hike & trek, say up Mt. Olympus? Are there English language-
oriented outdoors clubs (like the Appalachian Mt. Club) there?

My interest is primarily ancient, not Byzantine or beach-taverna-scuba.
What's best to see or explore?

How helpful are official tourist organizations there? For example, in
Iceland, the gov't offers expeditions & transport of all kind for campers,
the geologically curious, anglers, etc.

Are there fantastic discounts or packages available?

Finally, is Dodona or Samothrace worth visiting?

Any tips, information, lore, or reminiscences would be appreciated.

					Cheers,
