[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Adaptec SCSI advice

kncarp@nicsn1.monsanto.com (06/04/91)

I've decided to go with an Adaptec 1542B controller for my PC.
Calling around, I seem to be seeing two prices, one around $199,
the other around $299. I'm told the $299 is a "kit" that contains
Novell and OS/2 drivers, beyond that and the salespeople are lost.

Does anybody know if the $199 price includes at least the DOS drivers
and anything else I would need to run in a QEMM/DESQview environment?

I've gotten two statements, one indicating the two drivers I don't need
is the only difference, the other saying "We can sell you the base system,
but it's a real b...h to set up without the kit.". Can anybody shed
some light here?

"Dirt Cheap Drives" [(800) 872-6007] advertises the following adaptec
controllers...
1520 AT,SCSI $149
1522KIT AT,SCSI,Floppy,Cable,Software $160
1540B AT,SCSI,Bus Mastering $259
1542BKIT AT,SCSI,Floppy, Bus Mastering $279

From which I would ***GUESS*** that some people are quoting you
the 'bus mastering' version and others aren't.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about Dirt Cheap Drives beyond what I
read in their ad, am not associated with them in any way, not even
as a customer, and don't (yet :-) use scsi.

Regardless of the disclaimer, I hope this helps.
