[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Can you replace a 5-slot IBM-PC motherboard?

jsosa@houligan.encore.com (Joe Sosa) (06/10/91)

Are their any motherboards on the market that can fit into a True-blue
5-slot IBM PC? I've heard that a Baby-AT motherboard can fit, but I'm
not quite sure. And if it can fit, will the cards that fit into the slots
be too high for the original case?

If its impossible to replace, I'm trying to upgrade the system in any way
possible. It has 256k and I've heard that their is a process where one
can repopulate the 256k chips and replace them to get 640k, does anyone know
of this process?

Trying to get it done for Father's Day, Thanks,

The BULLET-286 System Board can be purchased for $120 (I think).
There is a dealer that I know of in SLC, Utah, but I expect that won't help
you. If this helps, here is the company's address:

Wave Mate, Incorporated
2341 205th Street, Suite 110, Torrance, California 90501
(213) 533-8190, Fax: (213) 533-5940

I don't know if the Bullet-286 was designed to fit into the true-blue case,
but I have personally installed 20+ such boards into both 5 and 8 slot
true-blue IBM cases and they fit like the original with no complaints.
The memory, of course, must be replaced with 100ns chips. And the board
can handle 1MB. They work nicely as 286 machines.

I put a 286-12 motherboard in my true blue ibm pc and it works 99%.
The missing 1% is that the slot alignment is such that only 2 or 3 of
the cards can have external ports on them and fit. I forget the
number of slots the motherboard has but basically it is 5 external
bays and 7 internal slots. 2 of them line up right. The rest work
just fine as long as you don't want to have external connectors.

On 256k motherboard to 640k... You can buy a memory board for it. I
had a 256k motherboard and a 384??k half length memory card. I'll
sell mine to you, but you probably can find one close and cheap to
wherever you are.
