The 384 that you are missing is the memory from 640-1024. This is called over base memory and is the memory that DOS uses to store such things such as video memory etc... AS far as your pc rebooting in WINDOWS (what else is new) I would break out the QEMM manual and fiddle around a bit. It sounds like there is a memory conflict somewhere. This is just a guess.
