I've been interested in an affordable home Unix solution for some time, and the recent price reductions in the 386/486 systems currently seen have finally convinced me to move. IDE drives in the 200 megabyte range are frequently offered in the popular high powered platforms, and I'm concerned about their suitability for Unix. I know IDE drives look like an ST-506 to the system, but am unclear in the nuances. If I anticipate problems, I may move to an Adaptec SCSI controller and appropriate drive. Should I avoid IDE if I want to run Unix (maybe BSD 4.2 when it becomes available). Suggestions? Victor -- Victor D. IDE drives have to be the most trouble-free drives you could ask for (Conner and Maxstore I personally can recommend). Stay away from SCSI if you want to run OS/2 hasslefree (unless you get IBM SCSI, of course)! -- David Feustel, 1930 Curdes Ave, Fort Wayne, IN 46805, (219) 482-9631 EMAIL: feustel@netcom.com or feustel@cvax.ipfw.indiana.edu
