[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] two questions about maxtor drives

andy@slcs.slb.com (Andy Hazlewood) (06/12/91)

First question: I have two Maxtor EXT-4380 drives. These drives are soft
sectored. Are there any pc controllers out there that would drive these
things? The drives are not switchable to hard sectoring. I assume they
would require some kind of ESDI controller.

Next question: I also have a Maxtor XT-1140. This is an MFM drive. As best
I can tell, head 0 has died on the drive. Is there any way to mask out head
zero and just use the others? I can't seem to move the partition table to
anything but head 0 cylinder 0.

DTC. I have two. I would love to be able to run with some other
controller... still, the price was right. I don't know you *can't* use
other controllers, but DTC "came with."
