[net.travel] Brisbane, Australia in July

I will be in the Brisbane area for 3 1/2 weeks in July, and would appreciate
any help in the following areas:

   1. Places  to see that are within ~500 miles of Brisbane. I have lots
      of material from the various tourist agencies, but I want to avoid
      any place that is too touristy. Also, I want to see the countryside 
      and the outdoors, not the cities. Just how bad are the roads in
      the outback?

	
   2. Any experience with renting a camper van? The prices I am getting
      from travel agents seem a little steep ($200/wk, US). Also, what is
      gas selling for?
