I would like to add a VGA/SVGA to a Compaq Portable 386.
Can it be done?

Thanks

Yes. Remove the back cover. If you look on the inside of the back case,
you'll find a diagram documenting the jumpers on the system board. One
of them configures your internal display as either an MDA or CGA adapter.
Select the MDA jumper setting. Once you have reassembled the computer,
install your VGA card and run setup, and you'll be ready to go.

Wow, a real Compaq employee on the Net!
Could you please tell me whether a Portable II (Model 2650, AT, 8MHz 286)
can be upgraded to EGA or VGA? The built-in CGA is very good,
but restricts me from using some of the latest software.
I heard I need ROM BIOS 'F' for EGA.
I have two slots open, one 16-bit.

Also is it still possible to get the special memory upgrade board
for this machine, that fits under the motherboard? For how much?

You wouldn't believe the mis-information I've been getting from
local Compaq dealers, including their service shops, so I'd rather
get it from someone who knows. There don't seem to be many Compaq
owners on this newsgroup, unforch.
Thanks, mike k
