[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] CMOS failure

My mother has recently bought a second hand AT, about 2.5 years
old. It has a problem with the CMOS.

When you turn on the computer, you get
   CMOS battery OK.
   CMOS checksum error.
and the setup is lost.

I opened the computer, but everything seemed ok. (But I couldn't
find the CMOS chip (what does it look like?))

We first noticed the problem after we put in a 3.5" disk drive
(no new controller, just a new cable). Could that have anything
to do with it?
