Many people asked for a summary of the results so I decided to post it to the net. Many thanks to all that contributed. Maybe we can get a co-op vacation going for all of us (netnews users conference - Club Med, Tahiti; would your boss send you?) _____________________________________________________ From: hou2f!pvlm Ask a travel agent about Negril Beach in Jamaica. Pete LaMaster ATT-BL 8233-5009 From ihnp4!cbscc!rsg How about a Club Med? Particularly one of those in the Caribbean. They offer many activities including some terrific scuba diving (so I'm told). Plusses: Lots of extras are included in the price. Scenery is great. Very easy way to arrange your first big vacation. Minusses: Costs more than doing it by yourself. Note: I've never done a Club Med, but have had several friends who have, and they have enjoyed them despite the cost. ...bob garmise at&t bell labs, columbus... _____________________________________________________ From: houxf!liem Craig, I had the same problem as you do now. A lot of people recommend Hawaii if you like the beach and breathtaking scenery. I'll be in Hawaii in mid-May. It will be my first time there so I can't tell you any thing but it is something to think about. Liem Nguyen _____________________________________________________ From: cbosgd!seismo!umcp-cs!judd The Red Sea is an absolutly tremendous place to dive (im told). Best access is via Egypt (most coastline/least hassle). Austrailia's Barrier Reef is nice and the locals speak a form of english. Closer to home - Baja Ca. is nice and not too touristy. Hawaii is pleasant except for the Honalulu side of Oahu. If you can stand not diving go biking in Europe and the UK. Much fun, lots of fems and very cheap (peoples exprs or special deal in summer to get there after that stay in hostles, take Eurrail, eat local foods in local resturants, get Am Express card so don't have to take lbs of Travelors cheques w/ you. PS if go to any non-western country you Will Get Sick but you Will Survive! _____________________________________________________ From: cbosgd!decvax!ogcvax!sequent!richard You could try Hawaii, for a start. Honolulu is "the big town" for action. Waikiki is okay if you don't mind looking a fat, 50 year old housewives (it's a public, and therefore undiscriminating beach) Talk to the Club Med people. The above two assume you have nothing against "fake" experiences, ie, vacations in places where people treat you as a tourist as opposed to a real person. For "real" experiences, do anything other than ordinary vacation type things. For instance, bicycle through Maine. In the winter. Kauai 2. Maui 3. Matlazan, Mexico 4. Montego Bay, Jamaica For the singles scene, you can't beat Lahaina, Maui, or Matlazan. I forgot to mention where I live, as it's a vacation for so many: San Diego (Black's Beach, La Jolla, etc.) is also good. _____________________________________________________ From: ihnp4!rabbit!ark Try Martha's Vineyard, Mass. It is possible to camp there fairly cheaply. Best place is Webb's Camping Area -- reservations are probably essential. _____________________________________________________ From: ihnp4!harpo!idi!kiessig I am in nearly the same boat as you with regard to vacations - i.e. I'm single, 25, like beaches and scuba spots. After a whole lot of thinking, and lots of brochure reading, I've come to the following conclusions: 1. A group diving trip Local dive shops have trips leaving all the time, with groups ranging in size from 6 to 30. Best diving location near here looks like it's Bonaire (I've been to Cozumel, which was OK, and I don't hear wonderful things about the Caymans). 2. Club Med Buccaneer Creek looks like a good choice. Seems like this almost a stereotypical option, but I've talked to people who've been, and they all enjoyed it a lot (except for certain clubs like Playa Blanca which are a little too Americanized). If you come up with anything else that would be fun for a person travelling alone, I'd love to hear about it. Rick cbosgd!idi!kiessig _____________________________________________________ From: cbosgd!ccieng5!tim ( Timothy G. Becker) I lived in Newport, Rhode Island for 2 1/2 years. It sounds like it fills several of your desires. It's an island (connected by bridge) surrounded by the ocean. I can think of several places where I saw scuba divers. The night life is quite active in the summer. There are lots of bars along the warf with delicious seafood and many people. If you'd like, I can give you more details about places to go. Have a good time wherever you end up! Tim Becker. Computer Consoles, Inc. Rochester, NY ..!cbrma!ccieng5!tim _____________________________________________________ From: cbosgd!decvax!teklds!tekmdp!dadlac!bergen I recommend two places where I had a great time. The first was at Club Mediterranee (spelling?) on the island of Moorea in Tahiti. I was single at the time, but it is also a great place for married people, and almost any age group. There are organized activities, but no pressure to participate in anything, if you don't want to. The second place was a Windjammer cruise to the British Virgin Islands on a 230 foot Barkentine. Information about either of these should be available from any travel agent. The last time I called club Med (several years ago), their number was 800-528-3131. They can send you a brochure about all of their areas around the world. If you take the Windjammer, the deck cabins are a lot more comfortable, although you'll probably sleep on deck every night unless it rains. Welcome to the world of the leisure class. Good luck. - Alan _____________________________________________________ From: decvax!mcnc!duke!phs!liz My husband and I went to Tahiti and Moorea last year. We had a wonderful time! Moorea is a small island about 10 miles from Tahiti, and has retained much of its Polynesian calm and charm. Tahiti has been commercialized and ruined by the French. (The French also control Moorea, but few of them actually are in evidence there.) The Polynesian natives are very friendly and nice. On Moorea, we ate lunch in the hotel's restaurant wearing wet swim suits and with our snorkeling gear by our sandy feet. I had wanted to get cleaned up first, but the people there said not to-- "This is Paradise." The coral reefs would make great scuba-ing. There is a ClubMed on Moorea, so that might be the place to meet other singles. You should realize that these islands don't have the nightclubs that islands in the Caribbean do--just palm trees, sand, sun, and surf. In other words, expect a very restful vacation. Because French Polynesia is in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to here, so plan accordingly. Take along lots of film! Oh, by the way, the movie "Bounty" was filmed on Moorea, so you could get an idea of the island if you go to see it. (I haven't seen it, but they were building the set when we were there.) Wherever you go, have a good time. Liz Holt _____________________________________________________ From: ihnp4!houxm!homxa!dman just two words for you: club med. - dman _____________________________________________________ From: decvax!mcnc!duke!ucf-cs!mike Craig: Try a Carribean cruise. These are quite cheap this time of the year. I believe that a cruise will meet your three requirements: Beach-place/scuba diving - I went on Paquet's Rhapsody last December. The ship stopped in Grand Cayman Island and Cozumel Island (Mexico). Both had excellent beaches and scuba diving was available. Age 24 - If you pick a line that cater's to singles you'll avoid the "geriatric" set (The Rhapsody had a fairly equal mix of age groups). I hope this helps, Mike Eisler. _____________________________________________________ From: ihnp4!bradley!brad As on who lives,breaths,eats,.... In PEORIA,IL I can agree, but what a mean thing to say. It must have been better than where you were or why did you go? On your question I like Puerto Rico, go there, fun, warm and the women are the best thing on the face of the earth. If you need some info on where to go let me know. Round trip tickets from Chicago go for 398 currently (I am going in June-July). I wonder when you where in Peoria, did you know about Bradley & Unix? _____________________________________________________ From: ihnp4!uw-beaver!fluke!chuckb (Chuck Bowden) Boy do I have a suggestion . . . go to the US Virgin Islands, specifically, St. Croix. Buck Island right off shore (many charter trips on sailboats, motorboats, etc avail. from town of Cristiansted) has one of the best snorkeling/scuba reefs in the world. The water there is crystal clear, the beaches are white sand, and there is a lot of night life type stuff in town. The Hotel on the Cay (Christiansted) has a great beach, at hobie cats to sail (the trade winds blow @ 15 -20 knots always) and a nice bar. If you haven't been to the Caribbean yet, go if possible. I have been down that way twice, once with the family and a few weeks ago on a honeymoon. I have never been to Hawaii, but from all I've heard, the Caribbean has to be much better. I couldn't resist the chance to reccommend St. Croix, since I have some very nice memories from that trip. I hope this helps (and gets to the right place). Chuck Bowden John Fluke Mfg. Co. (chuckb@fluke) _____________________________________________________ As it happens, my choice is between a Carnival cruise and the Club Med on the island of Moorea near Tahiti (Went out to see "The Bounty" just to see what it looks like). I'm still undecided, but I'm hoping for a sign from God (or the devil or Anybody/thing). Feel free to mail any other suggestions or comments, please note the path under my signature. Thanks All!
