[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Wither Adaptec?

keithe@sail.LABS.TEK.COM (Keith Ericson) (06/14/91)

I just sent down a purchase requisition to buy an Adaptec ACB-2372[A|B|C]
RLL disk controller card. Our purchasing agent called me back with the news
that Adaptec isn't selling disk controller cards anymore.

	I nearly dropped the 'phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's goin' on with Adaptec????

WOAH! It's simple. The current OEM customer base will be supplied as long
as they want the RLL (ACB-2372C) controllers. The ESDI (ACB-2322D) controllers
are still going like gang busters and are still shipping. The RLL business has
virtually dried up with the IDE drive business taking over. SCSI business has
gone through the roof (AIC-6260/AHA-(1510/1522/1542/1640/1740)). Nasty rumor
mill.

Whew! That was a close one: Adaptec makes the best disk controllers
I've used and I was worried I was going to lose them.

To reiterate Roy's "RLL business virtually dried up" note: I just
bought some RLL controllers for $67 and $40, the re-sellers are
jumping to get rid of them. Hook 'em up to a Maxtor or Micropolis
drive and you're in great shape!

Thanks for the "horse's mouth" correction, Roy!
