I am thinking of changing from VGA (640x480) to SuperVGA. I would like to hear from you if you have used the high res VGA on the following: - Is it worth it? What will it give me? I have a 386 with 4M memory, running Windows-3. Can I get smaller font and hence more windows? - I need a monitor to handle from CGA up to SuperVGA. Any specific brands you could recommend? I hear about Sony, NEC, Relysis, which should I buy? - Anything else I should be aware of? Please email me the replies and I'll summarize to the net. Thank you, var. ============================================================================ Varoujan Garapetian, Sun Microsystems, East-Coast Div. Right now, I am using the NEC 2A monitor with the Paradise VGA board. The highest resolution that I can display with Window 3.0 is 800x600x16. It's pretty good. And I recommend them. I am also planning of getting a system with higher resolution. The NEC 3D will be a pretty good choice (I think) and the VRAM card will be able to display 1024x768x16(256?) in the interlace mode. Interlace mode is "OK" but not too great for something like circuit design or CAD drawing. -- Mike my@dtg.nsc.com

Can I get smaller font and hence more windows? What you'll get is a screen where, instead of only having 640 pixels by 480 pixes to play with, you'll have 800 pixels by 600 pixels (or more, depending on the monitor and card you get). The windows in that screen will still be sized according to pixels. Now, lets say I run a maximized DOS application. These are sized according to a 640x480 screen. On my 800x600 screen, my dos apps will not take up the full width of the screen. They only take 480 pixels worth. As another example, when running dynacomm on a 640x480 system, I can only fit 80 characters in the terminal screen. On a 800x600 screen I can fit more (perhaps 100 or 110). > - I need a monitor to handle from CGA up to SuperVGA. Any specific > brands you could recommend? I hear about Sony, NEC, Relysis, which > should I buy? I run with a Sony CPD-1303. While it's not the best monitor in the world, it does work fine. NEC-Multisyncs also work, though you may need to adjust the horizontal setting in order for it to work correctly. > - Anything else I should be aware of? Make sure that the card you get supports Windows. I use a Paradise VGA card and have no problems. I'm not sure what other companies support Windows. I fully recommend getting something that will handle 800x600. I find it a lot easier to work with (though others that look at my screen complain and say "Geez, how can you read that?) -- "Organized fandom is composed of a bunch of nitpickers with a thing for trivial pursuit." -Harlan Ellison Patrick Deupree -> patrickd@chinet.chi.il.us

I'm using the 8514 fonts and the characters are much better formed. Terminal gives me 24x80 very readable characters. I tried 1024x768 but it was unbearable slow. Seems to be a big "knee" between the two modes. -- Phil Ngai, phil@amd.com {uunet, decwrl, ucbvax}!amdcad!phil

Hello, I hope I don't bore everyone with simple questions. I just bought a new superVGA(512K) card and monitor. The problem this new VGA user is having is that I do not know how to make this card operate in the superVGA mode. It came with some drivers that work with the programs that it supports. However, I am conserned about the ones it does not support. The vidio chip is a ACER M3125 and the back of the pc card has Everdata OL6411. The name of the card (Printed manual) is Enhancements Model: VGA-2280A. Does anyone know this card? Does it emulate any other more popular cards? I am not able to get the VPIC's program I just aquired to configure for the card. Lastly - If I should trade this one in for a different brand - what brand seems to fit the mid range budget, and be supported by the major software programs. Thank you in advance. Does anyone know the pinouts of the super VGA card connector and also the timing specs of the monitor ? Tks, Rick Sanchez rick.sanchez@EBay.Sun.COM
