I have a very generic-looking '386SX motherboard that has room
for 8MB on the board. The memory is arranged in 4 banks,
2 of which hold SIMMs (2 of either 256K or 1M) and 2 of which hold
DIP DRAMs. I currently have 1 Mb in 4 80ns SIMMs.
The problem:
I want to get 4 Mb of DRAMs in addition to the 1 M I've got...
this is possible according to the manual. The manual says the
other 2 banks "would be plugs in with DRAM X 8 chips". I'm assuming
this means 8 chips (no parity chip?) not 8 bits (wrong?). I'm
also confused by the hole configuration to plug into:

So, what I've labeled Y definitely look like places to plug in
DIP's... I have no clue what goes into X, or even if it is
related to the memory (the BANK labels are way over where I
put them, not by the X sockets). Assuming 2 Mb are supposed
to go into each bank, this could mean the "X" sockets are
something else, and each of the Y sockets holds 512K (like,
a 1M X 4 chip). But I definitely need some help here
before buying any chips!!!
If this is too complicated to explain over the net, I'd
gladly take book recommendations! Or maybe the best thing
to do is "forget this DRAM stuff, buy 1Mb SIMMs and sell
off the smaller ones!"
