[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] VGA monitor and its specification

hong@garfield.cs.mun.ca (Hong Cheng) (06/22/91)

Hi, I have a question about the VGA monitor specifications.
My VGA monitor is 256K VRAM VGA card with a .31mm VGA monitor.
The max res is 640 X 480. The problem came after I upgrade the RAM on video
board to 512K and I cannot figure the monitor at 640 X 480 X 256.
I posted a question about this befor. From one of the replies, it seems that
for 640 X 480 X 256 it requires a multi-sync monitor as the Horiz/Vert
scanning require is lower than the normal one for VGA. Is it true?
I have read the monitor manual many times, it is supposed to be able to handle
60/70Hz and 31.5-37.5kHz.
Thx

The reason 640*480*256 has a different scanning frequency

is because the card maker was to cheap to make it the same as VGA
standard. I had the same problem, the solution is to buy a paradise
1024 card or clone. I bought this card and I now have 640*480*256
on a IBM VGA monitor using standard frequency. The reason most cards
use a different frequency is to get rid of the flicker at 640*480.
VGA uses 60Hz for 480 line modes and 70Hz for 350 and 400 line modes.
70Hz is better than 60Hz and the card manafacture assumed that if

you bought a super VGA card(640*480*256 is a super VGA mode) that
you would buy a better monitor. BUY a good card that supports 640*

480*256 in standard VGA. The Paradise card does this. If you have
any questions just ask, I have information on about 50 cards.
                                                Conan
