Stephan mentioned that there was less pressure to go as fast as the car behind you might if you weren't in front of him/her. In New Jersey, it is illegal to prevent a vehicle from passing you on the left. Thus, if you're in the passing lane, and doing less than the guy who's barrelling up your tail, the law requires you to pull over to let that guy pass (provided there is somewhere for you to pull over).
