[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Video Choices: 34010 or 8514/A?

chuck@umbc5.umbc.edu (Chuck Rickard) (06/29/91)

I've heard random discussions on this topic for some time, but I don't
think I've heard a summary anywhere of this information.

Anyway, I am looking to get either a 34010 or a 8514/A based card, and
I'm not really sure which one is best suited for overall general use.
I run MS-DOS 5.0, OS/2 1.3, and SCO Xenix on my 386-40mhz machine.
Right now, the 8514/A seems to be the best supported card for the
operating systems I use, but how does it compare in raw specs to the
34010 or 34020 cards that are available.

I am currently looking at two cards, the ATI Ultra 8514/A with 1meg and
the Hercules Graphics Station with 1meg. I am leaning toward the HGS
because of its 24-bit graphics and built-in VGA card, but I have heard
that the drivers for Windows aren't good. I haven't heard anything
about OS/2 and Xenix drivers for it either. The ATI Ultra, on the other
hand, seems to be supported across the board since it is register
compatible with IBM's 8514/A.

So, if anyone has any info they can send pertaining to my future decision,
please email me. I will compile a summary and post it if there are enough
responses.

Thanks in advance!
