[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Motherboards

gaspo@VSSERV.SCRI.FSU.EDU (Scott Gasparian) (07/19/90)

Ok, since my .newsrc did't keep up with the switch of the groups,
I'm re-editing this note. I know that their has been allot of
traffic lately about motherboards and doityourselfupgradeprojects.
However, I do need the info and will be willing to summarize and
redistribute the responses.

Here's my original post.......

After long and carefull consideration, and firsthand excperience with
ALLOT of MailOrder houses (It's, like, my job, you know?), I have
decided on the replacement of the motherboard scheme to upgrade my
old 286 workhorse to a 386.

This is what I'm looking for:
  386 @ 20 or 25 mhz
  387 socket (essential)
8meg capacity (16meg would be cool too) preferably
SIMMs or SIPs, I hate DIPs
  ususal config of slots/ports.
AT case or XT case size (doesn't matter about the mounting holes,
I'm pretty good with power tools, (ask my SO).

What I'd really like to hear from you all, are quick descriptions of
386 motherboards from mailorder places, what you paid for them, how
well they behave (Win3.0? Desqview? mem access?), and just general
net-traffic rooting for your favorite. Any coments on the new genre
of boards that incorporate the serial/paral ports, drive controller,
and/or video on the board itself (pref IDE and XVGA).

IOW, send your motherboard pros/cons to me, and I'll do a summary
if enough requests come in.

This has nothing to do with SCRI and/or FSU, so end the address of
the mail houses too.

TIA--gaspo.

I still need the info on 386/20-25 boards, but if you send me mail
please put the type of proc in the subject line.
i.e., 386-25 means 80386@25mhz etc.

I will build them all up into lists and such under their subjects. If
you want to see the summarys, just email me and I will send you the
list of the sys of your choice including all postings, and email
concerning that board.

I've noticed that the prices of 386/33 systems are falling quite a
bit (i.e., ALR's 386/33 for $1995.00). I have been working on finding all
the parts to build an AMI Motherboard (not just BIOS) based system. But
the price on the boards is running at about 1,500.00 for the Mark IV 386/33.
Does anyone know if the prices of boards usually follows the reductinos in
complete (board in a box) systems?

In addition, I read the Intel expect 50% of their sales next year to
be in the 486 market.

I've been pricing motherboards lately and AMI is the most expensive by
far. Are their boards really that much faster/more reliable/prettier
than all the others or is AMI just money-grubbing scum?

How much does the motherboard affect the speed of the computer? If I
had a Micronics board with the AMI BIOS, would I have just as fast a
computer? (I'd imagine the motherboard is second only to clock speed
in determining computer performance, but I'm just a software dweeb.)

What kinds of motherboards are people using and how do they like 'em?
If I get many E-mail responses, I'll post a summary.
