I have just finished making my reservations at 7 different country inns in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont for October. The first thing to know is: make your reservations as soon as possible because they are filling up fast. I would suggest buying a good book on New England country inns, just for your own peace of mind. I don't know about New England, as this will be my first trip, but I have had some bad experiences with "word of mouth" recommendations.
