I just found a book at the store called DOS Undocumented, authored by about 7 different folks. ISBN 0-201-57064-5 about 686 pages comes with two disks and was $39.95 (huff!). Amongst describing the where and whats of the various reserved data structuredin gory detail, (such as the list of lists device drivers, curr dir structs, system file tables, job file tables, memory control managment and lots and lots of interrupts I bet ya never heard of) It also talks about writing TSR's with the disk swappable area... Seems that in dos 3.1+ ytou can find out via int 21h, just exactly where DOS's three stacks are, save them, do your thing, then restore the stacks! All this withoutever having to wait like most tsr's did before! It's a neat book, although a bit expensive. Its also got stuff on debuggers, command.com and networking.
