Regarding the article mentioning that stop signs in Canada are now bilingual and have STOP and ARRET, in France the stop signs just say STOP. Interestingly enough, the original international road sign fot stop was an inverted triangle (like the yield sign ) circumscribed by a red circle, with the word HALT in the middle. About the time that the US started using the international road signs, the US style stop sign was adopted as an international standard.

For those who don't wish to shell out K$ to find out the word printed on the stop signs in France, may I suggest investing < $10 in a Mille Bornes game. The French on the "Stop!" card is not "Arret!" but "Stop!" (and "Roulez!" instead of "Allez!" on the "Go!" card). M. LeBic
