A friend and I went on vacation in New England a few weeks ago. We drove thru Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Here is a short critique of the places we stayed. Surry Inn P. O. Box 25 Surry, Maine 04684 (207) 667-5091 $44 for a nice double room with private bath. American stlye breakfast included in the price of the room. Resturant serves fantastic dinner. Entrees from $12. Nice view of the bay from the dining room and nice fireplace. The room had a working fireplace, but we didn't check to see if we could use it. The owners will lend you a canoe if you want to go out on the bay. They have a very nice waterfront property with a small beach and a large lawn. Exceedingly non-commercial. Blue Hill Inn Blue Hill, Maine 04614 (207) 374-2844 $43 for a double room with private bath. No meal included. The owners will serve dinner for ~$20/person. The meal we had there was NOT to be reccommended. Cheap cuts of meat, inappropriately spiced vegtables, and choices that were not particularly (ahem!) synergestic. The soup and salad were decent. There is a restaurant about 500 feet (down around the corner) from the inn which looks to have reasonable prices ($6-$10) and good food. The room itself was quite nice. Scottish Lion Inn Main Street North Conway, New Hampshire 03860 (603) 356-6381 $53.50 (includes tax) for a double room. American style breakfast included in the price of the room. On Sundays, you can have breakfast, or brunch for half price. Very commercial atmosphere (it's associated with an "import shop"{tourist trap}). The first floor is a full time restaurant and pub. We shared a bathroom with them. (Quite distracting to be taking a shower while someone is pounding on the door.) The restaurant is quite good, although the menu was "affected" in pseudo-Scot fashion. Breakfast was volumnous and well prepared. The Inn at Longtrail Rt. 4, Box 267 Killington, Vermont 05751 (802) 775-7181 (800) 325-2540 $32 for a double with private bath. (doesn't include 11% tax and tip) American style breakfast included in the price of the room. We were there before they were open for the "season." Whatever that is. The people were very friendly, the dogs were too. This Inn is really a ski lodge, but a very nice one, and is directly adjacent to both the Long Trail and the A-T. As an aside: We spent two days hiking/driving around Acadia National Park. This park must be recommended for hikers in particular, although some of the hikes are mostly vertical. (The "Precipice Trail" is aptly named, and entirely worth the climb.) Plan to spend a few more than two days, and bring lots and lots of film.
