[net.travel] Review of a Country Inn in Vermont

I just returned home from a weekend at the Green Trails Inn in Brookfield
Vermont. The inn was built in the 1830's and much of the colonial decor
has been maintained. We stayed in the "Woodshed", an apartment that used
to be a wood storage place. It was very nice. It contained a living room,
kitchen, and bedroom with plenty of furniture and beautiful views.

Brookfield is a small town (about 7-8 houses plus the inn) in the middle of
nowhere, but home to Vermont's famous "Floating Bridge". The bridge is about
water level and the edges are usually under water. It is fun to drive across
though.

Green Trails is a Bed and Breakfast Inn. Each morning you have the choice
of Eggs & Bacon with Bran Muffins, or Pancakes (with Vermont maple syrup)
and Bacon. Plenty of coffee and orange juice plus a wide range of teas.
All meals are served family style (tables for eight where you are seated
with other guests). Dinner was $12.00 each and consisted of homemade soup
(DELICIOUS!), salad, an entree (they served ham while we were there), and
dessert (we had Bananas Foster). Wine is extra but a reasonable selection
was on hand. We met some great people while we were there.

The rooms at the inn are $27.50 per person (with private bath) or 24.50
without private bath. Reservations should be made well in advance although
we got lucky and needed only a month's advance notice due to a cancellation.
Breakfast is included in the price.

The reason for the trip was relaxation and to catch foliage season in Vermont.
We were there past peak (it was early this year due to a small storm two weeks
back) so many trees were already brown and lots of leaves on the ground.
The sugar maples were at their peak though, yellow with tinges of fiery reds
and oranges. Weather was sunny and in the 60's during the day but upper 20's
at night.

As I said before, Brrokfield is in the middle of nowhere so if you like to
go out at night to a nightclub or bar, then Brookfield is not the place for
you. My girlfriend and I realized that we don't know how to relax, we were
going crazy!! There were some nice country roads for long walks (I was on
crutches so we couldn't take advantage) and they are good for cross-country
skiing. (Brookfield is about an hour north of Killington, VT for downhill
enthusiasts).
