[comp.os.msdos.programmer] 8 bit mono forces vga to 8 bit

mmshah@athena.mit.edu (Milan M Shah) (02/14/91)

This is in ref. to the recent thread on dual monitor setups, in which an
8 bit mono card forces 8 bit access to the vga.

Someone posted a softare method to force a Paradise VGA card into 16 bit mode
(thus disabling the mono for the session). What I wrote down was set bit 2 of
port 0x3CE offset 0x09.

Well, I tried this, and all it seems to do is make all my video in text mode
invisible! I can still type and execute commands like execute win, at which
point everything is back to normal, but the speed as measured by checkit is
not affected.

Could the poster please clarify?

Thanks!
