sth@rayssd.UUCP (01/10/85)

Has anyone on the net traveled to Finland??? We are interested in going there
at the end of June or so, to catch the ~Midnite Sun. We would love to get any
and all information about it, like prices of any and everything, things to do,
etc. Zillions of thanx in advance!

I assume you mean the town of Rovaniemi. It is a delightful small city just
south of the Artic Circle. We stayed at a dorm for a school which was a
hotel in the summer. It is just above the train station and is easy to find.
Everyone goes up to a gift shop an the Arctic Circle to have their pictures
taken with Laplanders and reindeer in front of the Arctic Circle sign.

An even better trip is to go a little further north into Norway to Nord Kap
or North Cape, the most northern point in Europe. Kirkenes is the closest
town. The Midnight Sun shines on Kirkenes from May 20 to July 25. There
are several very nice guesthouses near Kirkenes.

The ultimate is to play golf by the midnight sun.

Rovaniemi is a nice small city in the Northern part of Finland but it's
not real Lapland. I agree that if you go to Finland you shouldn't make
Rovaniemi your final destination in the north. Take for example a bus
from Rovaniemi to Kilpisjarvi and then from there along the Norwegian
coast to Alta (possibly also to Hammerfest or North Cap if you like to be
able to say that you were there) and then return to Rovaniemi via Tana,
Utsjoki, and Ivalo (or still further in the east via Neiden and
Ivalo). Along the road make several stops, fish trout or salmon, and
participate in at least one organized overnite hike to the fells.
Maybe this is not the American way to make the trip but I am sure its
much more rewarding.

If you go to Finland, don't miss Helsinki! I was there last August, and
it's one of my favorite cities in Europe. Everyone there is very friendly
(they all spoke English quite well also), the city is clean, and the shopping
(especially for clothes) is fantastic.
