Can anyone suggest a nice vacation destination for the end
of January that is affordable on a student budget?

Oppps. Perhaps I should specify that I'm now in Boston MA
and am looking for somewhere vaguely tropical, (with sun,
swimming, etc.)

Yucatan. Many places there to see, many things to do, much good food to
eat. The exchange rate with Mexico will determine the cost but it can
be very inexpensive. Flights are not too expensive either. Try to get
on a charter group flight but just buy the flight and not the
accomodation package. Isla Mujeres near Cancun is a cheap place to
hang out and do a little diving, some great birding just north of there
as well. inland are Mayan ruins and some nice litle towns to stay in.

I think the Yucatan is a great place to visit. But it's likely to be
very hot and rainy in July. Flights to Cancun are often insanely cheap.
If you want some real first class snorkeling, be sure to visit neighboring
Belize. The islands off the coast (called 'the Cayes') are pretty
amazing. Belize is an English speaking country.
