--- We (my wife, two kids, and I) will be vacationing in California next August. We'd like any good tips for things to do and places to stay in Yosemite Nat'l Park. My kids will be 6 and 8 then, and so we are not interested in overly energetic activities, but a mile or two hike is no problem. We'd be interested in nice places that are not as congested as others. What are the best accomodations? Any things to avoid? We'll be there only a couple of days. Vick Bennison ...decvax!decwrl!rhea!tools!bennison (603) 881-2156

I would suggest trying to obtain accomodations in the park, if at all possible. As it does not sound like you are into camping out, I'd try the Yosemite Lodge or the Curry Park tents. The problem with out-of-park accomodations is that there's a 20 mile commute. The Yosemite Curry Co. (they run the lodges) has a reservations number in Fresno.

My kids will be 6 and 8 then, and so we are August in Yosemite is rather a zoo. There will be *lots* of people in the valley. It's still worth visiting, but you must have reservations (even for a campsite) months in advance. A hike from the valley to Nevada or Vernal falls is nice. Drive around to Glacier Point, the hike would be to much for the kids. Along the Glacier Point road, a side trip to hike to the top of Sentinel dome or one of the other small domes is easy enough and fun for the kids. If you can spend your time there during the middle of the week there *may* be less people. Accomodations range from tent cabins(Camp Curry) to motel(Yosemite Lodge) to a nice older hotel(the Awahnee). The Awahnee is nice and a little separate from the crowds, but I suspect you would have to make reservations now and still might not get in. Coming over Tioga Pass gives a chance to alpine areas and would be nice to combine with travelling to/from the Lake Tahoe area. The Tioga Pass is over 9900 feet elevation at the pass, so be sure your car is in good shape if you go that way. Tuolumne Meadows and White Wolf along the Tioga road have tent cabins. Prices(very approximate)- Ahwanee $100/night, motel rooms $50/night rustic wood cabins $30/night, tent cabins $15/night. Usually $3-5 extra for kids. All the Yosemite lodgings are reserved through one source. The phone is (209) 373-4171. Mail address : Yosemite Park and Curry Co. Yosemite National Park CA, 95389 There are also motels at the west entrances to the park at El Portal and Fish Camp. An AAA guidebook could help with those. Tom Goodwin NCR Corp. San Diego
