[net.travel] Information on Spain Wanted

norm@umcp-cs.UUCP (Norm Glick) (01/23/85)

My wife and I are going to Spain (primarily Madrid) for a week at
the end of March. Does anyone have advice about interesting places
to see, good restaurants, etc.? Can you recommend any good day trips
from Madrid?

Thanks,
Norman Glick

My husband and I went to Spain two summers ago, and really
enjoyed it. We also primarily stayed around Madrid, which
is absolutely beautiful. The hotel we stayed at was in
what is know as "New Madrid," called the Mellia Castilla.
A very pretty hotel with good food, and and excellent night club.

We photocopied a copy of Fodor's travel book on Spain. He had
a really nice walking tour of "Old Madrid." We did most of it in
one day, and liked old Madrid so much went back that night. In general,
we followed his directions and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.

Also took a bus tour around Madrid. I didn't enjoy that nearly
as much as cruising around alone. The Royal Palace is real
pretty but gets a little boring after a while. The cab drivers are
really nuts, so be prepared. Since I'm at work I don't have
exact names of places we visited, but if you like send mail to me
and I'll try to dig up the info at home. Oh, if you're flying
by Iberia...watch it! We flew from Madrid to Costa del Sol then had to
fly back to Madrid for the plane to NY. They held us up for 1-1/2
hours in Costa del Sol so we missed our plane to NY. They put everyone
up for the night but our luggage was already gone, and it was Sunday
evening...not much to do but drink and eat.

The people are pretty friendly, and prices are generally lower than
the states.

Let me know if you need more info and how you liked it.

Having been to Spain, I can honestly say that I found it a
complete waste of time. Of all the cities I was in, Madrid
was least worthwhile. Barcelona is a whole lot nicer. And
San Diego is a whole lot nicer than either of those, which
is why I went there during the semester break instead.

If you want to go to Europe, and are not particularly hung up
about Spain, I would recommend Lugano,Switzerland and Monte Carlo,
Monaco, both of which I found to be worth the trip. Unfortunately,
the same cannot be said for Madrid.

In contrast to Avi Gross's posting, which defames Spain for unspecified
reasons, I had excellent experiences in the country. My wife and I
lived in Spain (Barcelona) from May 1977 to October 1978, travelled
in the country, and loved every minute! We're ready to go back!

This depends on what you want. I lived for a year and a half in
in Paris and Lausanne (switzerland) and visited a fair part of
the continent.
Indeed Spain and Italy were my favourites becaused they were not
"so damn civilised" as Switzerland, Northern Europe and North America.
But I found something interesting in almost every place that I visited
because I always took my time to enjoy the places and their people.

If you go to Spain visit Toledo, Granada, Seville (sp??) which are
not very far from Madrid.
When we were in Spain most of the towns and cities were worth about
"One and a half days of touristing" (ie seeing museums, monuments etc) but
we spent atleast 2-3 days in each city and visited a lot of the non-tourist
part of the towns, eating/drinking in restaurants and bars visitied by
the locals. We also had the opportunity to walk into a local community festival
in Seville and a wedding in another town (the name escapes me). If
you are in Seville pass through the old cigarette factory in the center of
the town which has been converted to a university. I had beer (dirt cheap)
and lunch with the local students (by the way this factory is the one
in the opera Carmen ). We had fabulous time in Spain.

If you are in europe, and have the time, visit Paris. It is my city
for many many reasons.
