[comp.os.msdos.programmer] making VDISK.SYS go away

TOMIII@MTUS5.BITNET (Thomas Dwyer III) (06/19/91)

How do I make VDISK.SYS (the ramdisk supplied with IBM DOS) go away when
I'm done with it? I don't care about the drive letter - that can stay
around as a "used" drive letter. I just want my memory back.

The situation is this: I create the ramdisk in extended memory with
the /E option in config.sys. The autoexec then runs a program which
downloads my "real" boot program from a network server to the ramdisk.
After the autoexec runs this downloaded program, I have no use for the
ramdisk anymore, and would like my memory back for other applications.

I am familiar with a few shareware ramdisks which can be told to go away
but I have not seen one yet that uses extended memory (which is a must).

Please do not suggest that I download to a real disk, as this boot process
will be running on every machine at our site, sometimes on write-protected
floppies.

Any help on recovering the extended memory, or pointers to ramdisks which
already do this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
