[comp.os.msdos.programmer] Graphics Packages for MSDOS

sundar@pyrite.SOM.CWRU.Edu (Sundar Arunapuram) (06/20/91)

Does any one have any experiences with GSS*GKS and Metawindows? I am
looking for some information about the performances of each. We currently
use GSS for plotting maps (state boundaries, highways etc.). In GSS
we use polyline, polymarker, zoom in and zoom out, and some text information.
The current implementation is slow, and memory extensive. We are looking
for some graphics package which runs faster and consumes less memory (or
possibly use memory above 640k). I would like to know the conversion
effort required to go from GSS to Metawindows also.

I don't know about GSS*GKS, other than it is expensive. As for the
MetaWINDOWs product, well....

1. Expensive.
2. 90K TSR in the the non-royalty libraries, a linkable .LIB file in the
    royaltied library.
3. Crappy support.
4. Crappy upgrade policies.
5. Good speed.
6. Bad/inconsistent/outdated documentation.

Take a look at the GX Graphics Tool Kit, since it is supposed to be reasonably
nice.
