[comp.os.msdos.programmer] 8088/8086 AND BORLAND C++ v2 BUGS

macdonaldk@watt.ccs.tuns.ca (06/22/91)

A few notes about the IBM PC/8088/80386:

1. The original IBM PC, released in the summer of 1981, used an Intel
    8088, and was supplied with 16K RAM. At that time, the memory map
    reserved 256K for RAM expansion. The IBM PC/XT, which was released
    in 1983, also used the 8088, running at the same clock speed, but
    came with 128K RAM standard.

2. As far as I can remember, IBM's only use for the 8086 was for the
    CPU of a displaywriter (?), which was a word-processing computer
    released during the late 1970s.

3. Since the 80386 accesses memory directly from the motherboard, and
    not through the bus, its use on an ISA bus computer does not limit
    its memory accesses to 16 bits; it can access 32 bits at once. This
    does not apply, however, to older 386 computers built before ~1988.

NOW, I would like to ask you if anyone knows of an FTP site that holds
BORLAND C++ VERSION 2 bug fixes. I notice that the integrated editor
occasionally does not scroll up when the arrow key is depressed; a
press of the page-up/down key is required. My keyboard is ok, and is
not the source of the problem.

Also, does anyone have any information about OS/2 version 2. I can get
a copy, when released, for a very cheap price. It is claimed that
version 2 out DOSes DOS, and out WINDOWS WINDOWS. Any truth to this???

Later this fall, I plan to purchase a 486 computer. Is EISA the way to
go, or is ISA sufficient. It will operate under OS/2 version 2. Applications
will include Borland C++ version 2, Wordperfect 5 (6)? , and a communication
package.

Any help regarding the above queries is much appreciated. Please e-mail
your comments to me.

Thankyou

The original IBM PS/2 Model 30 used an 8086 processor.
