[comp.os.msdos.programmer] DOS 5.0 question

nather@ut-emx.uucp (Ed Nather) (06/25/91)

Up to MS-DOS 3.3, the command.com shell would check to see if you had
changed the switch character to something other than "/" and, if you
had, would recognize "/" as a pathname separator. The much-improved
MS-DOS 4.0 refused us this courtesy, which is why I am still using
MS-DOS 3.3.

I assume MS-DOS 5.0 has not corrected this error, which Microsoft
probably considers an advanced feature, but I thought I'd better ask ...

Has it been fixed, or am I stuck with MS-DOS 3.3 forever?

I'm not sure if DOS 5.0 has fixed that problem or not, but 4DOS will let you
use either the "/" or the "\". That is, of course, one of many improvements
that 4DOS makes over the regular command.com. I would recommend it to anyone.

A few simple questions:
    What is 4DOS?
Does it work with DOS 5.0?
Where can I get it? (is it pd/shareware)

4DOS is a command.com replacement. It adds many needed commands like MOVE, and
enhances a lot of the other other commands. It also has an extensive list of
batch file enhancements. I have been using 4DOS with DOS 5.0 and DV for a
couple of weeks now and have had no problems with it. 4DOS is shareware and is
available on most BBS's and on Simtel and its mirror sites.
